Encaustic painting is one of the oldest surviving painting methods, used on the Fayum mummy portraits of Roman Egypt nearly two thousand years ago. The medium is simple in its ingredients and demanding in its handling: refined beeswax, a small proportion of damar resin to raise the melting point and harden the surface, and pure dry pigment. Kept molten on a heated palette, the paint must be carried to the panel and placed while it is still fluid, so every mark is made against the clock.
Denise Regan works on rigid birch panels rather than stretched canvas, since the wax film needs an unyielding support. She begins with a thin ground coat, then builds the image in successive translucent layers. After each layer is laid down it is fused — reheated with a torch or heat gun until the new wax bonds to the one beneath it. That fusing step is what makes an encaustic surface permanent, and it is also where the painting changes: colors sink, edges soften, and passages that were separate become one continuous body of wax.
The later stages are largely subtractive. Regan scrapes back into cooled layers with blades and rakes to reveal the colors buried beneath, incises drawn lines that fill with pigment, and burnishes the surface by hand until it takes on a low sheen. Because the wax is translucent, light enters the painting, reflects off the pigment held at different depths, and comes back out — the reason encaustic work reads as lit from within rather than lit from the front. It is a slow, additive-then-reductive conversation that can take a panel through twenty or more layers.
Finished encaustic paintings are stable and archival, but they behave differently from oil. They should be kept out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, and never left in a hot car or an unheated garage. A soft, dry cloth is all that is needed: over the first months the surface continues to cure and can be buffed to a deeper gloss. Regan's encaustic panels are hung unglazed so nothing sits between the viewer and the wax.
